Blind Man and Guide Dog Survive Subway Incident

A blind man by the name of Cecil Williams and his guide dog fell onto the subway tracks as a train was approaching. Williams supposedly lost consciousness while waiting for the next train to arrive and fell onto the tracks. Williams said that his guide dog, Orlando, kept trying to hold him up as he was feeling woozy but couldn't keep him from falling. Although they fell, they were able to get to the middle of the tracks where one and a half train cars passed over them before coming to a stop. Luckily, they were both rescued with minor injuries.

First-Grade Suspended for 'Sexual Harassment'

In Canon City, Colorado, a six-year old boy was suspended from his school for "sexual harassment". His name is Hunter Yelton and he reportedly has had a crush on a girl in his class for a long time. So during their reading time he gave her a kiss on her hand. Although the girl was fine with it, Hunter was still sent to the principal's office and later suspended. Hunter's mom, Jenny Saunders, was told by the school's principal that his actions were seen as a type of sexual harassment. Saunders disagreed and said that sexual harassment is way too extreme, especially for a six-year old that merely kissed a girl on her hand. She thinks that her son should be punished for his actions but sexual harassment is over the top. The school is sticking to their stance because his actions fit the school's definition of sexual harassment. However, Hunter has also been suspended before for roughhousing and kissing the same girl on the cheek which might be why they classified it this time as sexual harassment.

NFL Stadium Breaks Record

Monday night, the Seattle Seahawks hosted the New Orleans Saints in a clash of the two top NFC teams. Seattle is notorious for their loud crowd noise, known as the "12th Man", which has been a huge part in their recent success. During this Monday Night Football game, the Seahawks had a record breaking crowd, about 68,000 fans, that were more hyped than ever. The crowd was roaring the whole game, making it very difficult for the opposing team. In the first quarter, the Seahawks defense returned fumble for a touchdown and at that point the noise was so loud that it actually measure as a "mini earthquake". Washington University's seismometer bounced between a magnitude of 1 and 2, which set a world record for largest crowd noise. Every time Seattle would score, there was a seismic signal that was traced at Washington University. The Seahwaks ended up winning 34-7, a crucial part being the booming crowd noise.

Offensive Personalized License Plate Approved by DMV

Recently, a San Diego radio station received a picture from an unidentified viewer that created a huge controversy. The license plate read "NOT SEE". At first, this license plate seems fine; maybe it's an inside joke or maybe he drives so fast that you can't see him or something. However, another zoomed out picture of the car showed that there was a swastika above the license plate, and the intention of the words "NOT SEE" are supposed to mean "Nazi". The anonymous viewer turned out to be the owner of the license plate, Shawn Calpito, who is a school bus driver. A local news station tried to crack down on this case, but when they arrived to his house, Calpito would not answer the door and the plates were removed from his car. Without the symbol above, the meaning of the plate is unclear, but when the DMV heard about the swastika above, they put two and two together and sent Calpito a notice cancelling the plates and requesting that they be surrendered. Although it still may be offensive to some people, Calpito has reportedly removed the swastika but kept the plates.

Police Arrest Man After Escaping for 33 Years

Oklahoma police recently arrested Anthony Rackley, a 62 year old man that escaped from a Maryland jail over 30 years ago. Rackley was convicted of robbery and, after escaping, earned his living by raising funds for the Lions Club community service organization. Just like everyone else (sarcasm) he personally contacted the local Oklahoma City police and turned himself in. Rackley stated that his co-worker knew he was a fugitive and was demanding large amounts of money from him that he would raise for the Lions Club, and was willing to turn him in if he didn't pay. Rackley, who was going by the name Jack Watson, said he was "willing to go back to jail to stop it". As Rackley is currently being sent back to prison, police are further investigating his "partner".

Supposed "Ghost" Appears to Damage Police Vehile

Recently, in Connecticut, a police officer was about to go home when he noticed that his driver's side mirror was completely ripped off and laying on the ground right next to the car. At first, he thought that it was some sort of vandal attempt, but surveillance footage showed otherwise. The parking lot camera caught on tape what at first appears to be a ghost like figure, which made sense because many police officers said they think the parking lot is haunted. However, further scientific research suggested that the apparition was nothing but a dust devil, a tornado-like whirlwind, which was actually accurate because of the weather conditions at the time. Although they "solved the case", the dust devil did manage to rip off the mirror, blow it around the parking lot, and blow it right back next to the car without damaging any other vehicles.

"El Chupacabra" Sighting in Mississippi

Recently, sights of an unusual looking animal have been happening all around the town of Picayune, Mississippi, and some residents say that the animal very closely resembles that of the Mexican legend, "El Chupacabra". The legend of this animal goes all the way back to the 1970's where reports of an odd animal were caught sucking the blood out of farmer's livestock. A family was actually able to capture this creature on video in their backyard. The recorder of the film compared the animal to a "if a zombie had a dog, it would look like that". Another said that she kept looking up "hairless coyote" and it kept coming up with "Chupacabra". Local wildfire administrators think that the animal is a coyote with awful mange and that it's probably just sick and weak and unable to hunt on its own. Whether it is actually a Chupacabra or it's just a coyote, these civilians feel frightened and feel like they're in danger until it's gone.

Spider Infestation Closes School in UK

The Dean Academy, in Gloucestershire, England, closed on Wednesday because of a supposed false widow spider infestation. The false widow spider are very similar to black widow spiders, but aren't nearly as dangerous. Although these spiders have not bitten anyone yet, local health authorities suggested that the school closes so they can terminate the infestation. Local health authorities are also saying that these types of spiders are becoming more common throughout the UK, and a species of the false widow are one of the most dangerous spiders in Britain. These authorities also said that the spiders are not very aggressive and don't usually seek humans and compare their bites to wasp stings.

Russian Flesh Eating Drug Spreads to the US

Last week, 5 people reported to an Illinois hospital with the same symptoms; rotten and scaly skin. Doctors believe these defects were caused by a heroin knockoff drug that spread from Russia. This drug is called Krokodil and is a cheap and easy to make drug that results in green, scaly, flesh eating skin. It hasn't yet been confirmed that these cases are because of Krokodil, but the doctor at the Illinois hospital thinks it is because the patients said they thought they were buying heroin. He also says that it's a "zombie drug" and "it eats you from the inside out". This doctor is also very concerned because it is more addictive that morphine and is about 1/3 the price of heroin, so it looks very appealing to buy. Similar cases were reported about a month ago in Arizona and Utah, and with these cases breaking out in Illinois, it looks as if it will only keep spreading across the US.

Salmonella Outbreak

Monday, a poultry producer in California stated that he is working with health officials to solve recent salmonella outbreaks. There has been an estimated 278 illnesses that have been reported in 18 states. The source of the outbreaks are thought to be caused by raw chicken products from Foster Farms. Although the Food Safety and Inspection Service has found the source, they have no yet identified the specific products and production. They continue to monitor the outbreaks but cannot get further information because of the government shutdown. The Food Safety and Inspection Service partnered with state health departments are beginning to inspect the products before and after production to try and prevent any further salmonella outbreaks to occur.

Cursed Lottery Winners

On August 13, 2013, a group of workers at the Ocean County Vehicle Maintenance Garage in New Jersey were shocked to find out that they had just won themselves a roughly $86 million powerball. After taxes and the even distribution among the 16 of them, they wound up with $3.8 million each! But is this as good as it seems it is? After about a month and a half, many of these lower-middle class millionaires say that winning the lottery was almost a bad thing. They feel that things are almost too hectic, with "long lost family members" asking them for large sums of money along with paparazzi at their every turn. Willie Seeley, one of the "Ocean 16", says that he's miserable and overwhelmed, and that "winning the lottery was a curse". He also said that "There are days I wish we were back to just getting paid every two weeks. You have to change your whole way of life, but we didn't want to change the way we lived. We liked the way we lived." What these people end up doing with them money is up to them, but just to put this into perspective, they probably have more money than they ever would've wanted and they still don't know what to do with it.

Northampton Clown

Making his first appearance on September 13, 2013 (Friday the 13th), the Northampton Clown has become one of the most talked about things on social media this past week. This unidentified clown has been seen harmlessly standing in random parts of the town smiling and waving with balloons. Many people think that this clown is very disturbing, are frightened by him, and some even see him as a threat. Because of all the confusion, he decided to make a social media page and stated that he just "wants to be spotted" and it's all just "a bit of harmless fun". Whether it's just for attention or not, this clown has sent many mixed messages to his audience, and should be fixed before something bad happens.

Tropical Storms Pound Mexico's Coasts

This last weekend Mexico was hit on its eastern and western coasts. Hurricane Ingrid has been reduced to a tropical storm, according to the Nation Hurricane Center. It has been patrolling the eastern coast of Mexico and Gulf of Mexico and made landfall in La Pesca on Monday morning. Tropical Depression Manuel affected the western coastline of Mexico and calmed over the weekend, but heavy rains continued southward. These storms have resulted in overflowing of rivers and banks, mudslides, and flooding. So far, these storms have combined to kill 21 people and 65 mile per hour winds and 15+ inches of rain are still expected to come.

Largest Volcano On Earth Discovered

Recently, scientist William Sager led a team of scientists from the University of Houston in the discovery of the largest volcano on Earth. The group found the volcano underwater roughly 1,000 miles east of Japan and named it Tamu Massif. At 120,000 square miles, it is one of the largest known volcanoes in the solar system and is about the same size as New Mexico. The largest volcano on land, standing at 2,000 square miles, doesn't even compare to Tamu Massif. Scientists believe that this massive volcano is 145 million years old and think that it became inactive a few million years after it was formed. Scientists hope that Tamu Massif can help give them clues on how massive volcanoes like this can form.

64 Year Old Woman Completes Historic Swim

On Monday, September 2nd, Diana Nyad became the first person to ever successfully swim from Cuba to Florida without the assistance of a shark cage. At the age of 64, this was her fifth and final attempt in 35 years (her fourth attempt while in her 60’s). She swam with a protective suit and mask to prevent jellyfish stings, which had affected her in earlier attempts. The 53 hours of constant swimming took a huge toll on Nyad, resulting in swelling of the tongue and face and also large amounts of salt water consumption. This made her very ill, and even with fatigue setting in, she still found the will to finish her lifelong goal and also make history.
