On Monday, September 2nd,
Diana Nyad became the first person to ever successfully swim from Cuba to
Florida without the assistance of a shark cage. At the age of 64, this was her
fifth and final attempt in 35 years (her fourth attempt while in her 60’s). She
swam with a protective suit and mask to prevent jellyfish stings, which had affected
her in earlier attempts. The 53 hours of constant swimming took a huge toll on
Nyad, resulting in swelling of the tongue and face and also large amounts of
salt water consumption. This made her very ill, and even with fatigue setting
in, she still found the will to finish her lifelong goal and also make history.
